For many years, existing PACS solutions have been providing central DICOM-based archive for medical data from the classic imaging disciplines. The ongoing trend towards medical universal archives and vendor neutral archives (VNA) also requires different approaches in dealing with so-called non-DICOM data. These include pictures, videos, audio signals, documents, medical devices data, etc. However, it is not necessary to convert them to the DICOM format. Archiving of each data type does not have same legal regulations. For example, x-ray examinations must be archived for at least 10 years according to the x-ray regulations, other medical documents 30 years or more. The way of information exchange has also changed. The proven interfaces based on DICOM and HL7, which were mainly used for backend integration, are now web-based interfaces that can be used for a seamless front-end integration, without opening third-party application.
